Michael Ryan retired as a Lieutenant Special Assignment, from the NYPD in 2018, after serving over 26 years. His service included 21 years of experience in supervision/management. His assignments varied and comprised of; Transit Bureau, Detective Bureau, Patrol Services Bureau, Support Services Bureau, Chief of Personnel’s Office and the First Deputy Commissioner’s Office. This enabled Mr. Ryan to gain incredible experience and knowledge in the country’s largest police department. He has a BS in Business Management and is a graduate of the 238th Session of the FBI National Academy.

Lieutenant Ryan, managed the Executive Protection detail for the First Deputy Commissioner and directed, and conducted advance and onsite safety measures which included local, domestic, and international travel. Prior to this assignment he was the Special Projects Lieutenant for the Office of the Chief of Personnel. He was the coordinator, for the Department’s Retiree Mobilization Plan, the liaison to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. and the NYS Police Memorial in Albany, overseeing the submission of applications for NYPD officers who were killed in the “Line of Duty.” Lieutenant Ryan, created and designed the Distinguished Service Medal, which is presented to those members that, have died, in the “Line of Duty,” as a result of post 9/11 illnesses. Lieutenant Ryan, received numerus honors throughout his career, including recognition for discovery 19 historical NYPD members that, were killed in the “Line of Duty,” and never recognized for their sacrifice. He trained USMA West Point Cadets (aspiring MPs), in Active Shooter response and tactics.
Lieutenant Ryan, and his wife Rosa (Sgt), retired from the NYPD June, 2018. Their daughter, followed them into Law Enforcement and is a NYPD Patrol Officer. Their son currently attends high school in Florida.
